So here’s our story…

My husband and I have been married for a little over 15 years now, and we’ve spent most of that 15 years overweight. We weren’t overweight BEFORE we got married, but circumstances in life caused us to put on a lot of pounds.

I (Tricia) worked for a health insurance company and put on 140 lbs, almost doubling my weight (I started at 150 lbs) over 7 1/2 years of working there. The building made me sick, I was on many medications the entire time I worked there, and I was severely depressed. When I quit that job I stopped taking all 3 medications the day I quit and dropped about 40 lbs just by getting away from that environment. This still put me at obese, but I was much happier.

One day in March 2013 DJ said “I’m tired of being fat, and I want to change this.” OK, sure! Why not? I decided my goal was to lose 54 lbs. So we started changing our daily routines as well as the food we ate. So far (since March) I’ve lost 59 lbs and he’s lost 93 lbs. The biggest change to our lifestyle has been how we eat. Sure we’ve thrown in some activity–but we’re not members of a gym and we don’t “work out”, we walk. We both have fitbits and that keeps us each very motivated to make sure we get our steps in every day. But by going to more whole foods, even if it’s real butter and calorie-dripping maple syrup, has been the biggest key to our weight loss.

Update 12/18/14: A lot has happened this year! Lots of changes, disappointments & big decisions. We are currently in the process of moving to Portland, OR. Living in Bismarck, ND doesn’t fit us. North Dakota fails us in general attitude, career opportunities and access to activity and healthy food. We are tired of fighting an uphill battle and have decided to leave. Because we are fighting so many battles, our healthy lifestyle has suffered. We both look forward to friendlier people, healthier fresh foods & easy access to physical activity!
